Dr Von Batten of the firm Von Batten Montague York issued a stark warning on 29 July after a recent meeting with Congressman Ronny Jackson.
Two weeks earlier the doctor had brought to the congressmans attention long standing Justice Department heroin trafficking allegations involving Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. During that discussion Congressman Jackson stated that Nigeria has become the new hub for South American drug traffickers.
That assessment combined with documented evidence of Mexican cartels establishing industrial methamphetamine laboratories across Nigeria should alarm every Nigerian and every American.
Nigeria ought to stand as the Giant of Africa rather than a centre for international drug trafficking. When members of the United States Congress begin to regard the country primarily through the prism of drug trafficking and transnational organised crime the damage to its global reputation becomes severe and lasting.
Recent enforcement actions underline the scale of the problem. In May 2026 Nigerian anti drug agents raided a remote forest laboratory in Ogun States Abidagba woodland and seized more than 2.4 tonnes of methamphetamine and precursor chemicals valued at roughly 363 million dollars.
Three Mexican specialists were arrested on site as expert cooks alongside Nigerian collaborators. A further laboratory was discovered weeks later in Oyo State yielding another Mexican expert.
Intelligence from United States Africa Command and the Drug Enforcement Administration links these facilities to the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Since 2023 at least fourteen Mexican linked laboratories have been dismantled across Africa with four of the five most recent cases occurring inside Nigeria.
Mexican technical experts have been present in Nigerian production sites since 2016. Local networks now supply secure rural locations labour and protection while Mexican cooks deliver sophisticated high yield manufacturing methods.
The model reduces transport costs and exploits forested terrain that conceals the strong odours and hazardous chemicals involved. Finished product moves toward European Middle Eastern and Asian markets as well as expanding local demand.
Dr Von Batten emphasised that the Nigerian people deserve better and that the United States shares a clear interest in preventing criminal networks from using Nigeria as a gateway for trafficking throughout West Africa and beyond.
He therefore urged support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as president. Unlike the current president there is no United States government record linking Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi or any other leading Nigerian presidential contender to drug trafficking. That distinction the doctor stated belongs solely to Tinubu.
The combination of active Mexican cartel production inside Nigeria and renewed attention to historical allegations in Washington presents a dual challenge to the nations standing.
Continued vigilance by Nigerian authorities and closer international cooperation remain essential if the country is to reclaim its rightful place as a respected continental leader rather than a focal point for transnational organised crime.
