A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Landan Salifu, has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s recent trip abroad, describing the journey as ill timed and accusing the President of putting political interests ahead of the welfare of Nigerians.
Salifu said Tinubu should have remained in Abuja to address the economic difficulties facing Nigerians instead of travelling abroad.
“The trip was ill timed. Don’t expect the President to go abroad and recharge; go abroad and sober up and resign, because he has failed Nigerians,” Salifu said.
The ADC chieftain argued that economic conditions remained difficult for Nigerians across different income groups.
“Nothing is going right for low income earners, the middle class, which is fast vanishing, and even the economically endowed,” he said.
Salifu also pointed to an increase in petrol pump prices, saying the price rose from ₦1,200 to ₦1,310 as the President was leaving the country.
According to him, the development was another indication that the President should have been in the country dealing directly with issues affecting citizens.
“This is the time when the President should be in Abuja addressing issues important to Nigerians, not stepping out to recharge for the 2027 election,” Salifu said.
He accused the President of prioritising political power over the wellbeing of Nigerians, arguing that the country’s economic challenges required greater attention from the presidency.
“It is prioritising power over the wellbeing of Nigerians,” he said.
Salifu’s comments come amid continuing public debate over the cost of living, petrol prices and the economic pressures facing households and businesses.
He maintained that Tinubu should reflect on his administration’s record and resign, rather than focus on preparations for the 2027 election.
