In a significant move to boost the cocoa industry in Abia State, the Abia State House of Assembly has made substantial progress in the legislative process of the Abia State Cocoa Development and Marketing Board Bill, 2024.
During the recent plenary session, the bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie, successfully passed its second reading on Tuesday, April 23rd, 2024. This proposed legislation aims to establish a dedicated board responsible for overseeing cocoa production and marketing within the state.
The establishment of the Abia State Cocoa Development and Marketing Board is expected to significantly enhance the cocoa sector, which contributes to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By creating a specialized body to manage cocoa production and marketing, the state government aims to improve the efficiency and productivity of the cocoa industry, thereby increasing its contribution to the state’s economy.
Following the successful second reading, the bill has been referred to the joint Committees on Agriculture and Trade & Commerce for further legislative review. These committees will conduct any necessary actions, including public hearings and consultations, before the bill progresses further in the legislative process.
The Abia State House of Assembly’s move to strengthen the cocoa industry through the establishment of a dedicated board is a testament to its commitment to promoting agricultural development and economic growth in the state. By focusing on the cocoa sector, the state government is taking a significant step towards diversifying its economy and creating new opportunities for farmers, processors, and marketers in the cocoa value chain.
