Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives for Aba North/South Federal Constituency under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has issued a public apology following a widely circulated incident involving an e-hailing driver, Stephen Abuwatseya.
The altercation, captured on video and shared across social media, shows Ikwechegh assaulting and threatening Abuwatseya during a dispute over a delivery at his Maitama residence in Abuja. The video sparked significant public outrage, with Ikwechegh seen repeatedly slapping and berating the driver for requesting that the politician step outside to collect an order of snails—an interaction Ikwechegh found disrespectful.
Following the incident, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed on Monday that Ikwechegh was questioned by officers at its Maitama Division regarding the altercation.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Ikwechegh expressed regret over his conduct, acknowledging that what began as a misunderstanding quickly escalated. He apologized for his actions, stating they were not in line with his personal values or the responsibilities he upholds as a public servant.
“I sincerely apologize for my words and actions during this incident. I recognize the distress and frustration this has caused Citizen Abuwatseya, his family, and the public at large. As a public servant, I understand the weight of my role and how my words can impact others,” he said.
Ikwechegh emphasized his commitment to accountability, stating that he and Abuwatseya have resolved the matter through alternative dispute resolution methods, and he intends to honor the terms of their agreement.
“I am aware of the responsibility my role entails and the impact my words can have on those I represent,” he added, expressing a renewed commitment to the values expected of his position.
