Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid, has called for the resignation of Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, over allegations linked to past political activity on social media.

In a statement released on Sunday, Mamedu pointed to screenshots circulating online that appear to show Amupitan participating in partisan discussions before taking office. One of the posts reportedly signaled support for a narrative associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress, including a message suggesting victory was certain.

Mamedu criticized the electoral body’s response, especially its denial that the social media account in question belongs to the chairman. He argued that dismissing the claims despite growing digital evidence only deepens public suspicion rather than resolving it.

He added that even if the posts were made in a private capacity before the appointment, their timing close to the 2023 general elections raises concerns about neutrality. According to him, this proximity is a key reason many Nigerians now question the impartiality of the electoral leadership.

Mamedu emphasized that the strength of Nigeria’s electoral system depends not only on actual fairness but also on how the public perceives those in charge. He warned that widely shared claims of past political alignment have weakened confidence in the commission.

He further stated that if such allegations surround the individual responsible for overseeing elections, then Bola Ahmed Tinubu should take action by replacing him in order to protect institutional credibility.

Mamedu also urged the National Assembly of Nigeria to carry out a transparent and thorough investigation, warning against what he described as a recurring pattern of inaction on critical governance issues. He stressed that Nigerians expect lawmakers to address the matter openly and ensure accountability.

Addressing Amupitan directly, Mamedu said the role of INEC chairman requires absolute neutrality, both in reality and in public perception. He argued that the current situation has significantly damaged that perception and called on him to step down in the interest of restoring trust.

He also called on religious leaders across Nigeria to speak up on governance and accountability, urging them to take a clear stand against impunity and encourage their followers to support transparency.

Mamedu concluded that given the weight of the allegations and the public debate they have triggered, Amupitan should resign to preserve confidence in the electoral process.

The controversy continues to fuel national debate about the independence and credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, with increasing demands for openness and institutional accountability.
