The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has formally resigned from his position, citing health reasons as the primary cause of his sudden departure.
Ganduje, who previously served as Governor of Kano State from 2015 to 2023, tendered his resignation with immediate effect. In his resignation letter, he emphasized the need to step back from the demands of national party leadership in order to “focus on personal well-being.”
“My health and personal well-being must now take priority,” he wrote, adding that the decision was difficult but necessary.
While the official explanation points to health-related issues, sources within the APC suggest that Ganduje’s exit may have been influenced by mounting political tensions and growing dissatisfaction among key party stakeholders. Several insiders believe the pressure from internal factions played a significant role in his decision to vacate the party’s top office.
Ganduje assumed the role of APC National Chairman in August 2023, during a particularly volatile period for the ruling party. His appointment followed ongoing struggles to unify APC factions after the 2023 general elections, which exposed deep divisions within the party.
During his tenure, Ganduje faced persistent leadership challenges and internal wrangling, with critics pointing to a divisive leadership style and an inability to fully reconcile warring factions across various state chapters. Supporters, however, credited him with trying to stabilize the party during a politically fragile time.
Despite efforts to consolidate leadership, APC under Ganduje continued to grapple with intra-party rivalry, regional power tussles, and questions over succession planning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Political observers now see Ganduje’s resignation as a pivotal moment for the party. His exit is likely to trigger fresh power struggles as the APC seeks a replacement capable of managing its complex internal dynamics and preparing it for the next electoral cycle.
As of now, the APC has not officially announced an interim replacement, but party leaders are expected to convene in the coming days to chart a path forward.
