Armed bandits have killed one police officer in a fierce gun battle in Kaduna State.
The incident happened when police officers responded to a distress call about bandit activities in the area. As soon as the officers arrived the bandits opened fire on them. In the heavy exchange of bullets one policeman was shot and died on the spot.
The attackers escaped into the bush after the shootout. Police teams later moved into the area to search for the bandits but no arrests have been made yet.
The Kaduna State Police Command confirmed the death of the officer. They said the officer was brave and lost his life while trying to protect innocent citizens from criminals.
This latest attack adds to the growing security challenges in Kaduna State where banditry kidnapping and clashes between herders and farmers have continued for years. Many communities in the state live in fear because of frequent attacks by armed groups.
Residents are calling on the government and security agencies to do more to stop the killings and bring the bandits to justice. They want better equipment more personnel and stronger action against criminal groups operating in the forests.
No group has claimed responsibility for this attack. The police have promised to go after the bandits and make sure they are caught.
This sad news comes at a time when many Nigerians are already worried about the high rate of insecurity across the country especially in the North West region.
The family of the slain officer and the entire Nigeria Police Force are mourning the loss of their colleague who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
