Elder statesman Edwin Clark has urged the immediate departure of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to ensure the party’s survival.
Clark articulated his concerns in a formal letter addressed to the PDP’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagun, emphasizing that Wike’s continued presence poses a threat to the party’s integrity.
Clark’s Concerns Over Wike’s Influence
Clark, a prominent leader within the Pan-Niger Delta Forum, expressed his discontent with Wike’s alleged tactics to manipulate political dynamics in Rivers State, particularly in relation to Governor Siminalayi Fubara. He accused Wike of leveraging his closeness to President Bola Tinubu to exert undue influence over state affairs, which he believes undermines the PDP.
During a press briefing in Abuja, Clark stated that he could no longer remain silent as Wike’s actions threaten both the party and the governance of Rivers State. He warned that if the PDP leadership fails to act decisively against Wike, it could lead to disastrous consequences for the party and its members.
Call for Accountability
In his letter, Clark demanded a thorough investigation into Wike’s alleged anti-party activities, suggesting that if found guilty, Wike should face expulsion from the PDP. He highlighted the urgency of addressing such issues, noting the recent defections of several former governors to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as indicative of a broader crisis within the PDP.
Clark’s remarks also included a critique of Damagun’s leadership, accusing him of enabling Wike’s disruptive behavior and failing to uphold the party’s constitution. He emphasized that Wike’s attempts to control Rivers State are unconstitutional and detrimental to the PDP’s future.
Ongoing Party Challenges
The internal strife within the PDP has been exacerbated by the ongoing rift between Wike and Governor Fubara, which has led to significant political turmoil in the Rivers State House of Assembly. This situation has prompted calls for immediate action from the party’s leadership to restore order and unity.
Clark’s statements reflect a growing concern among party leaders about the direction of the PDP and the need for decisive leadership to navigate the challenges ahead. Tags: Edwin Clark, Nyesom Wike, PDP, Political Crisis, Rivers State, Party Leadership, Expulsion Call, Governance Issues
