Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of actively working to destroy democracy in Nigeria.
In a statement released by his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, Secondus labeled last Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State as a blatant case of electoral fraud.
He further condemned the recent off-cycle elections organized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Imo, Kogi, and Edo States, calling them a “show of shame.”
Secondus expressed concern over comments made by APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, who boasted that the controversial Edo election would serve as a template for upcoming polls in Ondo and Anambra States. According to Secondus, the ruling party is intent on silencing the opposition, with the ultimate goal of creating a one-party state by 2027.
“Nigeria’s democracy is sitting on a keg of gunpowder due to rampant rigging,” Secondus warned, stating that if the results of the Edo election stand, it could jeopardize the future of free and fair elections in the country.
He emphasized that the essence of democracy lies in allowing diverse voices to challenge the ruling party, but lamented that the APC has demonstrated intolerance for dissenting opinions. “The manipulation of the Edo election was blatant,” Secondus claimed, adding that opposition leaders were harassed and key actors, including security forces and electoral officials, were compromised.
“The world is watching us tarnish the reputation of this beautiful system of governance, which other nations use to stabilize and develop,” he concluded.
