Enugu State is on the path to revolutionize education with the construction of 260 smart schools across its political wards, set to be operational by 2025.

This was announced by Governor Peter Mbah at a town-hall meeting held at the Old Government Lodge in Enugu.

The Governor revealed that construction is well underway in 160 wards, with plans to commence work on the remaining sites shortly. These smart schools aim to provide more than just primary education, offering a compulsory, free education for a span of 12 years to every child in the state.

The smart school initiative incorporates early life learning, ensuring a seamless transition for children from nursery to primary schools. “Our children are at the heart of our plans for the state,” said Governor Mbah. He emphasized the modern learning environment these schools will offer, transitioning from traditional chalkboards to smart boards, and replacing notebooks with notepads for lesson notes.

The Governor envisions an Enugu child as a smart ICT child, and plans are underway to integrate these smart children into scholarship schemes. Additionally, the administration intends to expand its palliative programs to benefit students across the state.

In the health sector, the administration is constructing 260 Type II Health Centres across the wards. 30 of these health centres have already been awarded, with an additional 100 set to be awarded soon. The state government is also increasing the intake of nurses into state-owned institutions and giving the schools of nursing a much-needed upgrade.
