Globacom, a leading telecommunications company in Nigeria, has emphasized its long-standing dedication to sponsoring the Ofala of Onitsha and other major cultural festivals across the country.
During the 2024 Ofala Festival, held on Saturday at Ime Obi in Onitsha, Anambra State, the company’s Divisional Head, South, Mr. Tochukwu Okechukwu, highlighted Globacom’s recognition of culture as a key driver of national development. He noted that cultural celebrations foster a shared identity, unite people through traditions, and play a significant role in promoting values and history.
Addressing the company’s continuous sponsorship of Ofala, Okechukwu explained that cultural industries—such as festivals, tourism, and the arts—could greatly boost the economy by generating employment, revenue, and awareness for local products.
“Culture shapes education and can spark creativity and innovation, enhancing critical thinking and problem-solving. It also strengthens a nation’s soft power, helping it gain international recognition through diplomacy, trade, and cultural exchange,” Okechukwu stated.
In an increasingly interconnected world, he emphasized the essential role of communication in fostering understanding and collaboration. “At Globacom, we aim to empower every voice through affordable telecom services and digital solutions, helping communities stay connected,” Okechukwu added.
He further affirmed Globacom’s commitment to leveraging technology to benefit society. “We see a future where tradition and innovation complement each other. Connectivity can strengthen community bonds, bridging generations and fostering collaboration. That’s why we continue supporting cultural festivals like Ofala and Ojude Oba.”
The Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, also expressed gratitude to Globacom for its unwavering support, which has elevated the profile of the festival. He revealed that efforts were underway to enlist the Ofala Festival in UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The 2024 Ofala Festival, marking the 23rd anniversary of Igwe Achebe’s reign, included key events such as the monarch’s emergence from his annual seclusion and his regal dance around Ime Obi. Several age groups, adorned in colorful uniforms, participated in the traditional celebration and paid homage to the Obi.
Globacom is set to conclude the festival with a Royal Banquet in honor of the monarch on October 23.
