Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has refuted claims that he is seeking a ‘free ticket’ or special privileges ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi, speaking through his media aide, Ibrahim Umar, dismissed suggestions that he was lobbying for automatic candidacy, stating that he remains committed to democratic principles and fair competition.

His response follows a recent interview in which the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, denied any plan to field Obi, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, or other 2023 candidates in the next election. This clarification comes after factional LP spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi previously claimed the party would position Obi to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

When asked about the ‘no automatic ticket’ stance, Umar emphasized that Obi remains unbothered by political distractions.

“Our principal, Peter Obi, remains steadfast in his commitment to democracy and the well-being of Nigerians,” Umar stated. “He has never sought a free ticket or special treatment but instead advocates for a level playing field where candidates can compete fairly.”

Umar urged Obi’s supporters and the public to focus on critical national issues rather than misleading narratives, reaffirming the former Anambra State governor’s dedication to good governance, economic growth, and social justice.

“Peter Obi’s actions will always be guided by democratic values, ensuring Nigeria’s path to prosperity and greatness,” he added.
