The National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) USA has officially endorsed the upcoming nationwide protest scheduled for Thursday, August 1, aimed at addressing the pressing issue of bad governance in Nigeria.
This endorsement comes just hours before the planned demonstration, which is organized under the theme “End Bad Governance in Nigeria.”
Dr. Lloyd Ukwu, President and CEO of NADECO USA, emphasized that peaceful protests are a constitutional right, provided they adhere to principles of non-violence. He warned that any attempt to intimidate participants would be a serious violation of democratic principles. Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, Dr. Ukwu criticized the Nigerian government for its ongoing pleas for more time to address issues, questioning, “More time for what? To acquire more private jets or renovate more residences?” He condemned the government’s efforts to criminalize protests by targeting their organizers.
Dr. Ukwu reminded the public that President Bola Tinubu, along with others attempting to suppress the protest, has previously participated in movements advocating for change. He cited several instances from the past where Tinubu took part in protests, including calls for action against former President Jonathan regarding national security and the Chibok girls’ abduction. He noted that Tinubu’s political career has been significantly influenced by such movements, stating, “NADECO wishes to remind Mr. Tinubu and the Nigerian people that Tinubu himself is a product of incessant and numerous protests.”
The NADECO USA president further pointed out that many prominent figures, including Tinubu, have historically exercised their right to dissent, highlighting the irony of their current stance against the protestors advocating for good governance. He stated that protests have historically sparked significant social and political movements aimed at exposing injustice and corruption, stressing that the goal of these demonstrations is to demand change, not to antagonize the government.
Dr. Ukwu expressed concern over the divisive tactics employed by Nigerian leaders, using tribalism, ethnicity, and religion to suppress calls for accountability and good governance. He reaffirmed NADECO USA’s commitment to democracy, accountability, and the rule of law, urging the international community to closely monitor the planned protest to ensure the safety of all participants.
In a message directed at security operatives, he reminded them of their duty to protect the rights of protesters, as stipulated in Section 83(A) of the Police Act. He urged them to recognize that these individuals are citizens advocating for democracy and good governance, which ultimately benefits everyone, including the security forces and their families.
NADECO USA stands in solidarity with Nigerian youths and all advocates of democratic governance, emphasizing the importance of peaceful assembly in the pursuit of justice and accountability.
