Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has questioned whether President Bola Tinubu will be able to campaign for the 2027 presidential election, saying that drug effects are affecting the president’s brain and speech.

Lawal made the remarks during an interview on the Symfoni programme, Naija Unfiltered. A clip from the interview began circulating on social media on Monday.

“I want to see how Bola Tinubu will come out and campaign,” Lawal said.

He also alleged that “the effects of drugs is making him speak gibberish.”

Lawal, who served under former President Muhammadu Buhari, has recently become increasingly critical of the political direction of the country and Tinubu’s administration.

He previously left the African Democratic Congress after alleging that the party’s presidential primary had been manipulated in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Following his departure from the ADC, Lawal joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress and declared support for a possible presidential ticket involving former Anambra State governor Peter Obi and former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso ahead of the 2027 election.

In previous interviews, Lawal has also raised questions about Tinubu’s health and urged the president to consider his wellbeing after completing his current term.

He has referred to Tinubu’s frequent trips to France and made comments about the president’s personal habits, including an alleged preference for silk cigarettes.

The latest remarks go further by directly questioning whether Tinubu can withstand the demands of a presidential campaign and alleging that his speech is being affected by drugs.

Tinubu has not publicly responded to Lawal’s latest comments, and no response from the presidency had been issued by the evening of the report.

With the 2027 presidential contest already beginning to take shape, Lawal’s comments add another layer to the growing political debate over Tinubu’s health, fitness and ability to seek another term in office.
