The United States is reportedly assessing a potential political scenario in Nigeria that could follow President Bola Tinubu’s administration ahead of the country’s next presidential election, according to Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C.

The group, through its social media account @batten_von, said that Washington is increasingly focused on Nigeria’s political outlook and believes Tinubu faces serious challenges in securing victory in the upcoming election.

It further alleged that Tinubu could only retain power through undemocratic practices, including electoral manipulation.

The group said its objective is to encourage the United States to communicate directly and clearly with Tinubu, his political allies and Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that Washington is monitoring developments surrounding the electoral process.

According to the group, the United States should make clear that there could be consequences for actions intended to suppress voters, undermine democratic participation or interfere with the ability of Nigerians to freely determine their next president.

The statement also stressed that the United States should not support any particular Nigerian candidate or political party. Instead, it argued that Nigeria’s next president must be determined solely by the Nigerian electorate.

The allegations come as preparations and political maneuvering intensify ahead of Nigeria’s next presidential election. Tinubu, who came to power after winning the 2023 presidential election, is expected to remain a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.

The 2023 election was highly contested, with opposition candidates challenging the results through Nigeria’s judicial system. The Supreme Court ultimately upheld Tinubu’s victory.

Nigeria’s elections remain a major issue for both domestic and international observers because of the country’s political and economic importance in Africa and its strategic significance to the United States and other international partners.

INEC is expected to face continued scrutiny over electoral transparency, voter participation, political violence and the credibility of the electoral process as the next election approaches.

While Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C. portrays the alleged U.S. assessment as evidence of growing concern in Washington, there has been no independent confirmation presented in the statement that the U.S. government has concluded Tinubu cannot win legitimately or that Washington has formally adopted a specific post-Tinubu strategy.

The statement highlights growing attention to Nigeria’s democratic process and the potential role of international pressure in discouraging any attempts to undermine the credibility of the country’s next presidential election.

The central position presented by the group is that Washington should remain neutral while making clear that any attempt to suppress the Nigerian electorate or compromise the integrity of the electoral process could affect Nigeria’s relationship with the United States.

With the next presidential contest expected to generate intense political competition, electoral integrity and the independence of Nigeria’s democratic institutions are likely to remain among the most closely watched issues in the country.
