American rapper Nicki Minaj has drawn fresh attention to Nigeria’s security crisis after reposting a statement by Peter Obi on the reported killings and mass abductions in Niger State.
Minaj’s action came after Obi raised alarm over the situation in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, where residents were reportedly attacked, abducted and killed.
Obi said the reported violence showed the growing danger faced by communities in parts of Nigeria and called for urgent action against the criminal groups responsible.
The former Anambra State governor also called for intelligence led operations, better coordination among security agencies and stronger protection for communities affected by attacks and abductions.
The Borgu crisis has been linked to reports that hundreds of people were abducted, although reports differed over the exact number of victims and authorities continued to verify the figures.
Obi referred to reports that some of those abducted had subsequently been killed, while others remained missing.
He also highlighted a separate reported incident in which a bandit group allegedly killed a Nigerian and sent the victim’s head to a community leader over a ₦50 million levy.
Obi said such incidents showed how criminal groups were using killings, kidnapping and ransom demands to terrorise communities and hold residents hostage.
He called for a stronger response from the government, saying security agencies should focus on identifying and dismantling the networks behind the attacks rather than simply responding after people had already been killed or abducted.
Minaj’s repost brought Obi’s concerns to her large international audience and quickly generated reactions from Nigerians at home and abroad.
The development became even more notable after Minaj subsequently followed Obi on X.
Reports checking her public X account said Obi was the only Nigerian presidential candidate in the 2027 race whom she was following at the time.
The rapper’s decision generated further discussion because of the timing. Her follow came shortly after she amplified Obi’s comments about the killings and abductions in Niger State.
Some Nigerians welcomed the international attention to the security crisis, while others focused on the political significance of a major international celebrity interacting with a Nigerian presidential candidate.
However, Minaj has not publicly announced an endorsement of Obi’s 2027 presidential campaign. The confirmed developments are that she reposted Obi’s statement concerning the Niger State violence and subsequently followed him on X.
The wider security crisis has continued to generate concern across Nigeria, with attacks, abductions and ransom demands affecting communities and putting pressure on authorities to improve intelligence gathering and protection for civilians.
The reports about the Niger State crisis have also appeared alongside separate reports concerning deaths of suspected illegal miners in custody, adding to wider public concern about deaths and security related incidents in the state.
For Obi, the Niger State killings have become another issue on which he has called for stronger government action.
For Minaj, her decision to amplify his message has brought the issue to a much wider international audience.
The social media interaction has therefore generated significant attention, but Minaj’s repost and follow should not be presented as a confirmed political endorsement unless she makes such a statement publicly.
