Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has condemned the Federal Government and the 10th National Assembly over what he described as N7 trillion worth of questionable projects inserted into Nigeria’s 2025 national budget.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, Obi criticized the integrity of the country’s leadership, declaring that Nigeria has effectively become a “crime scene.”

“How else can we explain the distressing revelations by BudgIT, which uncovered a staggering N7 trillion in questionable projects inserted into the 2025 national budget?” Obi queried. “I am convinced that this figure represents only a fraction of the actual amount misappropriated. These findings are deeply troubling and confirm my long-held position that we have turned our country into a crime scene.”

Civic tech organization BudgIT had earlier, on Tuesday, alleged that the National Assembly included several projects in the budget that were not aligned with Nigeria’s Medium-Term National Development Plan (2021–2025). In response, the Senate, through its Committee on Media and Public Affairs Chairman, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, denied the claims, insisting that the budget process followed due diligence.

Obi further highlighted the rising poverty levels and deteriorating infrastructure across the country, calling for urgent reform.

“We must urgently and aggressively combat corruption, misappropriation, and fiscal recklessness in order to manage our resources effectively and efficiently, and invest in critical areas of development: health, education, and lifting our people out of poverty,” the former Anambra State governor emphasized.
