People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and Delta North Senator, Ned Nwoko, asserts that Nigerians deserve the right to own and carry firearms.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Nwoko revealed his commitment to sponsoring a groundbreaking bill on self-defense and firearms ownership regulation, emphasizing its importance in light of recent security challenges, notably the tragic Plateau killings that claimed over 100 lives.

Nwoko passionately advocates for the introduction of an amendment bill in the Senate, contending that empowering law-abiding citizens with firearms could enhance community safety and provide a means for individuals to protect themselves and their families from immediate threats.

Recognizing the need for caution, Nwoko highlights the importance of stringent regulations and comprehensive training to prevent misuse and ensure responsible ownership. He stresses that this initiative, if implemented, must be accompanied by multiple layers of control to safeguard against potential abuse.

Furthermore, the Delta lawmaker suggests that introducing licensed dealerships for firearms could be a strategic solution to curb the illegal smuggling of arms, creating a regulated avenue for legal firearm acquisition.

Nwoko’s proposal has ignited a national discourse, with opinions divided between those in opposition and those in support. As the nation grapples with escalating security concerns, Ned Nwoko’s call for a paradigm shift in firearm ownership and regulation takes center stage, prompting crucial discussions on the balance between individual rights and community safety.
