Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has officially announced her intention to pursue a second four-year term as Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), with her current mandate set to expire in August 2024.
The decision follows widespread backing from WTO members, and Okonjo-Iweala formally communicated her re-nomination bid to WTO Chair, Norwegian Ambassador Petter Olberg, on Monday. The WTO’s African Group has also expressed strong support, urging for the re-nomination process to begin promptly.
Since taking office in March 2021, Okonjo-Iweala has focused on revitalising the WTO, showcasing her leadership in fostering cooperation and delivering tangible outcomes. At this time, no other candidates have announced their intention to run for the role.
