Catholic cleric, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has urged former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, National Democratic Congress (NDC) figure Peter Obi and other opposition leaders to unite in the interest of Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The G-100 Coalition disclosed this in a statement signed by Salihu Moh. Lukman on Thursday, following a meeting between its leaders and Onaiyekan at his residence on October 29, 2026.
The coalition said the meeting focused on efforts to bring opposition political parties together under a common platform capable of strengthening democracy, promoting credible electoral competition and providing Nigerians with an alternative leadership option.
During the meeting, the delegation briefed the Cardinal on its ongoing efforts to build opposition unity and the progress made in developing three major documents designed to guide the proposed political alliance.
The documents are the National Covenant for Democratic Renewal, the Framework for Opposition Unity and the National Reform Programme.
The National Covenant for Democratic Renewal outlines the coalition’s guiding principles and shared commitments, while the Framework for Opposition Unity explains how the proposed alliance would operate and coordinate its activities.
The National Reform Programme, on the other hand, sets out the policy priorities and direction of a government that may emerge from the proposed political cooperation.
According to the coalition, work on all three documents has been concluded, with efforts now focused on their formal adoption ahead of its second summit scheduled for Monday, November 9, 2026.
Political parties participating in the coalition are expected to publicly endorse and unveil the documents at the summit as part of efforts to strengthen their commitment to a common political agenda.
The statement said Onaiyekan commended the opposition leaders for their initiative and expressed support for efforts to build a united opposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
The Cardinal reportedly welcomed the possibility of Nigerians having credible alternatives at the polls, noting that such choices would give citizens the opportunity to determine their future and decide who governs them.
He also stressed the need for competent, honest and compassionate leadership, saying these qualities were important in addressing Nigeria’s numerous challenges and improving the living conditions of citizens.
The coalition further disclosed that it briefed the Cardinal on its plans to attract more political parties into the alliance and establish clear mechanisms for resolving disagreements that may arise among participating members.
It said the proposed platform was not merely about bringing opposition politicians together to contest elections but also about rebuilding public confidence in leadership through a new vision and approach to governance.
According to the statement, the coalition’s agenda places particular emphasis on citizens’ welfare, national security and restoring public trust in government.
The delegation also expressed appreciation to Onaiyekan for his longstanding commitment to justice, compassion and national development, while requesting his continued prayers for the success of the initiative.
The G-100 Coalition added that its leaders would visit other prominent Nigerians and diplomatic missions in the coming weeks to explain their objectives and seek wider support for the proposed opposition cooperation.
The statement was signed by Lukman on behalf of the coalition parties under the slogan, For God and Country.
