Onyinyechi Mark delivered an exceptional performance to secure Nigeria’s first Gold medal at the 2024 Paralympics in Powerlifting on Friday.

Her remarkable achievement includes lifting an astonishing 150kg in the 61kg category, setting a new world record.

Mark outperformed China’s Cui Jianjin, who took the silver with a lift of 140kg, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who claimed bronze with a lift of 130kg.

This victory not only marks Nigeria’s first Paralympic Gold medal in Paris but also ends the nation’s wait for a Gold medal at the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Paris. The 23-year-old athlete has been lauded by Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Senator John Enoh, who praised her for her phenomenal performance and the immense pride she has brought to the country.

Enoh stated, “This performance is nothing short of phenomenal. Today, you hoisted the flag of our great nation at the ongoing Paralympics. Not only did you lift 147kg to break the Paralympic record and win a Gold Medal, but you also rose to the challenge and lifted 150kg to set a new world record. You have brought immense pride and joy to Nigerians, demonstrating the resilient Nigerian spirit. We are so proud of you. The government and sports-loving people of Nigeria celebrate you, our champ! Thank you for doing it for yourself and for the country.”

Onyinyechi Mark has now set the last three World Records in this event, previously lifting 146kg and 147kg before her latest record-breaking feat.
