Nigerian powerlifter Esther Nworgu clinched a silver medal in the women’s 41kg para powerlifting event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics on Wednesday, marking Nigeria’s second medal at the Games.
Record-Breaking Performance
Nworgu showcased an exceptional performance, lifting 118kg, which not only secured her the silver but also set two new records with lifts of 112kg and 118kg. She finished just shy of gold, which was claimed by China’s Zhe Cui, who set a new Paralympic record with a lift of 119kg.
Competition Highlights
First Lift: Nworgu started strong with a lift of 106kg, placing her second behind Cui, who lifted 108kg.
Second Lift: She then raised her game, lifting 112kg, while Cui increased her lead with a 113kg lift.
Final Lift: In her final attempt, Nworgu achieved her best lift of 118kg, securing the silver medal, with Brazil’s Lara de Lima taking bronze with a lift of 109kg.
Overcoming Adversity
Nworgu’s achievement is even more remarkable considering she dislocated her shoulder just two days prior to the event. Despite the injury, she expressed immense joy at her success, stating, “It is like heaven to me.” This resilience highlights her determination and strength, as she lifted with significant limitations due to her injury.
Nigeria’s Paralympic Journey
Esther Nworgu’s victory follows Eniola Bolaji’s historic bronze medal in badminton earlier in the week, making Nworgu the second Nigerian athlete to win a medal at these Paralympics. Bolaji’s win was notable as it marked the first time an African had medaled in badminton at the Olympic or Paralympic Games.
Looking Ahead
With more events still to come in the Paralympics, Nworgu’s performance has raised hopes for further successes for Team Nigeria, which aims to build on its previous achievements, including a total of ten medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.
