Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has enacted a significant policy change by approving an extension of the retirement age to 70 years for human health workers and medical consultants.
This new policy, effective from August 12, 2024, aims to alleviate the ongoing shortage of healthcare professionals in the state, which has been affecting residents’ access to medical care.
The decision was announced via a circular dated September 6, 2024, and signed by the Head of Service, Dr. Mrs. N. Obioma. The circular replaces the previous retirement age and service years as outlined in public service rules, allowing health professionals and consultants to continue working until they reach 70 years of age or complete 40 years of service.
Dr. Otti’s administration introduced this policy as part of its broader strategy to revamp the healthcare system in Abia State. The move is designed to address the shortage of medical staff and improve healthcare delivery, ensuring that residents receive timely and effective medical attention.
This new policy reflects the Governor’s commitment to enhancing the quality of healthcare services in Abia State and ensuring that the state’s healthcare system can better meet the needs of its population.
