The vibrant city of Enugu is gearing up to host the World Athletics-certified Enugu City International Marathon on Saturday, May 3, 2025, with an anticipated turnout of over 3,000 athletes from Nigeria and beyond.

The event, featuring both a 42km full marathon and a 10km race, promises to be a landmark occasion for sports and economic development in Enugu State.

Lloyd Ekweremadu Jr, the Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, expressed enthusiasm about the marathon, highlighting its potential to become a cornerstone of the state’s annual calendar. “Governor Peter Mbah has approved the Enugu City International Marathon as an annual event due to its economic promise and ability to engage our youth,” Ekweremadu stated. He emphasized that the marathon is not a one-off but a sustainable initiative designed to stimulate the local economy through tourism, local business engagement, and international exposure.

Explaining the choice of a marathon over other sporting events, Ekweremadu noted, “Marathons allow for mass participation, enabling us to involve thousands of athletes and youths in a single event, fostering community spirit and healthy competition.” This strategic decision aligns with the state’s broader vision to position Enugu as a hub for sports and youth development in Nigeria.

Mrs. Yetunde Olopade, Managing Director of Nilayo Sports Management Company, the race’s organizing consultants, praised the Enugu State Government’s commitment to sports. “Governor Mbah’s investments demonstrate a clear roadmap for transforming Enugu into a powerhouse for sports development in Nigeria,” she said. Olopade highlighted the state’s proactive approach, from infrastructure improvements to hosting international events, as a model for other regions.

Adding to the event’s prestige, Governor Peter Mbah will join thousands of runners, participating in the 10km race from start to finish. His involvement underscores the state’s dedication to promoting fitness and community engagement at all levels.

The Enugu City International Marathon is poised to attract a diverse field of competitors, from elite international runners to local enthusiasts, all vying for glory on the scenic routes of Enugu. With the state government’s backing and the expertise of Nilayo Sports Management, the marathon is set to deliver a world-class experience while boosting Enugu’s profile as a destination for sports tourism.

As preparations intensify, the event is expected to draw significant attention, offering opportunities for local businesses, cultural showcases, and international partnerships. The Enugu City International Marathon is not just a race but a catalyst for economic growth and community unity, marking a new chapter in the state’s sporting legacy.
