Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has publicly voiced his dissatisfaction with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that the party has failed him and his supporters.

Fubara, who assumed office as governor under the PDP banner a year ago, made this declaration during a meeting with the Senate Committee on Privatisation, led by Senator Orji Kalu, at the government house in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

Senator Abba Moro, a former Minister of Interior and a prominent PDP leader, was also present. Governor Fubara addressed Moro, stating that he no longer felt bound by party protocols, as the PDP had disappointed Rivers State.

He emphasized that he and his supporters are now operating as a movement dedicated to defending democracy rather than functioning as traditional party members.

The governor’s remarks come in the wake of a political crisis in the state, highlighted by a recent incident in which an unidentified man attempted to detonate an explosive at the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt. The hotel was hosting high-profile individuals, including the visiting Senate committee members, and the attack was reportedly intended to justify calls for a state of emergency in the state. The police have since apprehended the suspect.

Fubara elaborated on the incident, suggesting that the attack was part of a broader plot to create chaos and prompt emergency measures in Rivers State. He expressed his belief that divine protection and the righteousness of his administration would prevail against such schemes.

The governor also criticized the perceived lack of legal action against offenders due to their influential status, particularly concerning tenure elongation for former local government chairmen—a contentious issue in the state.

Governor Fubara clarified that his stance is not about personal conflict but about defending Rivers State against those who seek to exploit it. He reaffirmed his commitment to protecting the interests of the state and its people against those who believe they hold power over others.
