In a continued commitment to invest in critical sectors driving development, health, and poverty reduction, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate visited the University on the Niger (UNINIGER) in Umunya yesterday, where he donated N50 million to support the institution’s growth at its take-off campus in Iyi-Enu.
Obi also visited the School of Nursing at Iyienu Mission Hospital in Ogidi, providing an additional N10 million to support nursing education and training.
Obi reiterated that financial contributions toward health, education, and poverty alleviation are not simply expenditures but essential investments that fuel long-term development. He noted the ongoing neglect of Nigeria’s health and education sectors, which continue to face funding shortages, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient governmental support, all with far-reaching consequences.
“The health sector, in particular, is severely burdened by funding gaps, lack of infrastructure, and insufficiently transparent project execution. Most critically, Nigeria suffers from a significant shortage of healthcare professionals,” he explained, pointing to the country’s current doctor and nurse shortfalls relative to WHO guidelines.
Obi emphasized that the only viable solution to this shortage is to invest significantly in training healthcare professionals nationwide, thus strengthening the workforce. “Our sacrifices today in these sectors will lay the foundation for future development,” he asserted.
He expressed gratitude to the leadership, staff, and students of both UNINIGER and the Iyienu Mission Hospital School of Nursing for their dedication to advancing Nigeria’s health and education. As the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Obi concluded with optimism, affirming his belief that “a New Nigeria is possible.”
