Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi expressed his deep sorrow over the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District.
Obi shared his condolences via his X handle, stating he was “deeply shocked” by the news of Ubah’s passing, which occurred on Friday in London at the age of 52.
Obi recounted their last meeting on July 12 during the burial of Chief Pius Onwuzo in Nnewi, Anambra State, where Ubah had warmly welcomed him and invited him for lunch. Due to prior engagements, Obi had to decline the invitation. During their conversation, Ubah acknowledged Obi’s commitment to humanitarian progress and expressed a desire to collaborate despite their political differences.
In his tribute, Obi praised Ubah for his philanthropic efforts through the Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation, which focused on supporting the less privileged by investing in education and health initiatives. He urged Ubah to continue his charitable work, emphasizing the importance of such contributions to society.
Obi concluded his message with heartfelt prayers for Ubah’s family and the people of Anambra South, asking for God’s forgiveness for Ubah’s sins and eternal rest for his soul. He also expressed a sincere apology for mistakenly referencing the wrong burial event in his initial condolence message.
Ubah’s passing has elicited numerous tributes from various political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who described Ubah as a “renowned businessman and politician.” Tinubu extended his condolences to Ubah’s family and the people of Anambra State, acknowledging the senator’s significant contributions to the nation.
Other notable figures, including former senators Ben Murray-Bruce and Shehu Sani, also mourned Ubah, highlighting his impact in both politics and business. The Senate recognized Ubah as an exemplary leader whose untimely death represents a substantial loss to his constituents and the nation at large
