Nigeria mourns the loss of one of its cherished cultural figures, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion.”
On Friday, the legendary musician, actress, broadcaster, politician, and activist was laid to rest. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, died at Reddington Hospital in Ikeja following a collapse at an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.
Her passing sent shockwaves through Nigeria and the world, as tributes from every corner of the globe poured in. The funeral service was held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos, and was attended by numerous dignitaries, celebrities, and fans.
Following the service, Onwenu was interred in a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi, Lagos. The ceremony saw the attendance of notable figures such as Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, and Alex Otti, Governor of Abia State, who both paid their respects to the late icon.
Onwenu’s influence extended beyond her prolific musical career; she was also a respected broadcaster, actress, and a passionate advocate for women’s rights and social justice. Her contributions have made a lasting impact on Nigerian culture and society.
Onyeka Onwenu is survived by her two sons, alongside countless fans and admirers who will continue to celebrate and remember her extraordinary legacy.
