In a poignant message shared on his X handle, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 elections, recounted a deeply emotional experience he faced recently.

He attended an event featuring the legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu, who captivated the audience with her performance, concluding with her iconic song, “One Love Keep Us Together.”

However, the joyous occasion took a tragic turn shortly after her performance. Obi described how, just minutes later, Onwenu collapsed after drinking water and was rushed to the hospital. He followed her to the hospital, where he witnessed the medical team’s relentless efforts to save her life. Despite their best attempts over two hours, they ultimately delivered the heartbreaking news of her passing.

Obi expressed his condolences to Onwenu’s family, friends, and loved ones, emphasizing the profound impact of her loss. He described her as a national treasure whose music and activism inspired generations. “Her passing is a tremendous loss for the entire nation, and she will be deeply missed,” he wrote.

He extended gratitude to those who supported Onwenu during her final moments, including Mr. and Mrs. John Momoh, Mr. and Mrs. Okonkwo, and Mr. Okpara, as well as Governor Alex Otti and Mr. Femi Ajayi, who returned to the hospital the following day to finalize arrangements related to her passing.

Obi concluded his message with a heartfelt wish for Onwenu’s soul to rest in peace, urging that her legacy continue to inspire and unite people. He called for solace in the memories shared with her and acknowledged the significant impact she had on many lives.
