The Nigerian Police have returned ₦3 million that was extorted from Kelechi Isaac, a Ghana-based Nigerian, by officers from the Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Isaac, who was in Bayelsa for a friend’s traditional wedding, fell victim to the extortion.
Earlier, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the arrest of the involved policemen. In a statement issued on September 5, Adejobi announced, “The policemen involved in the ₦3 million extortion case have been apprehended. They are attached to the Zone 16 Command in Yenagoa. The command has been directed to present the officers at the Force Headquarters (FHQ). The FHQ is committed to purging the system and ensuring justice in all reported cases.”
Adejobi expressed discontent over the unprofessional conduct of some officers, especially regarding forceful extortion. He emphasized that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) condemns such behavior and does not accept any form of bribe or settlement from officers. The IGP is determined to uphold the integrity and ethical standards of the Force.
On Friday, Isaac confirmed to Premium Times via WhatsApp that the police had returned the ₦3 million. He mentioned, “They handed me the money today. I am just returning from Bayelsa. Although the money was given to me in cash, I requested a Point of Sale (PoS) agent to transfer the funds to me, which they did.”
