A violent attack by gunmen has claimed the life of a police officer and left another critically injured at Ugwu Abba Asaga Ohafia, a community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State.

The incident, which occurred around 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday near a police checkpoint by the Afor Market, caused widespread panic as residents fled for safety.

Efforts to obtain detailed information from the Abia State Police Command were inconclusive, as the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, stated, “The picture is not very clear at the moment. I will give you feedback on the above.”

Reacting to the tragic event, Chief Ibe Okwara Osonwa, the Member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency, condemned the attack and expressed deep sorrow over the killing of the officer.

“It is with a heavy heart that I share this tragic news. The loss of a dedicated police officer and the critical wounding of another is a devastating reminder of the dangers faced by those who dedicate their lives to our safety,” Hon. Osonwa said in a statement.

He extended his condolences to the bereaved family, acknowledging their pain and urging the community to honor the officer’s service. “Losing a loved one in such a manner is a tragedy beyond words. My thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased as they navigate this difficult time,” he said.

The lawmaker called for unity and peace within the community, urging residents to reject violence and foster understanding and support to promote safety and harmony.
