Abuja police have detained Honorable Alexander Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives representing Aba North and South, following accusations of assaulting a Bolt driver during a delivery dispute at his Maitama residence.
The incident, reported to the Maitama Divisional Headquarters, led to swift action from the authorities. According to SP Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Command, Ikwechegh allegedly struck the driver, Mr. Abuwatseya, during an argument over delivery procedures.
“Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh when a disagreement arose about how the delivery should be handled, resulting in a reported physical assault,” said SP Adeh. The FCT Police Command has expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s alleged disregard for law enforcement, citing a reported comment made by the lawmaker after the alleged assault: “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating, as authorities described, a troubling contempt for police authority.
Ikwechegh is currently in custody at the Maitama Police Station, where he is undergoing questioning. The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory, CP Olatunji Disu, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, promising a transparent inquiry and a commitment to justice.
Further fueling the controversy is a widely circulated video capturing the altercation, where Ikwechegh is seen verbally berating and slapping the driver after being asked to personally receive his delivery at the door. At one point, the lawmaker was recorded threatening to make the driver “disappear,” an intimidation that has sparked public outcry.
In a second video segment, the driver, visibly distressed, is seen in his car without a shirt, claiming that his clothes were torn by Ikwechegh during the confrontation.
Police have assured the public that appropriate legal actions will be taken upon the completion of the investigation.
