The House of Representatives has taken a significant step towards establishing the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Federal University of Nigerian Languages, despite ongoing controversies surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s educational background, particularly his connection to Chicago University.

The bill, which aims to promote the study and preservation of Nigerian languages and cultures, successfully passed its first reading on Thursday.

Sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu and eight other representatives, the bill successfully passed its first reading on Thursday. It seeks to create an inclusive educational environment that welcomes students from various backgrounds, regardless of race, creed, or political affiliations.

According to Section II, Part I of the proposed bill, the university will prioritize the advancement of learning, ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to pursue higher education in Nigerian languages and cultures. The institution aims to produce graduates who can utilize Nigerian languages to foster societal growth while engaging in research, innovation, and postgraduate training to leverage Nigeria’s vast natural and human resources.

The proposed university is also expected to collaborate with national institutions focused on language and cultural studies to enhance Nigeria’s linguistic heritage. Its responsibilities will include offering Nigerian language training and consultancy services, conducting outreach programs, and supporting in-service training and continuing education.

Section 1(2) emphasizes the university’s mission to develop skilled professionals in Nigerian languages, improve communication in local languages for national unity, and facilitate knowledge acquisition in these critical areas. Once established, the institution will act as a catalyst for postgraduate training, research, and innovation aimed at the effective and sustainable use of Nigeria’s resources.

The bill outlines several key mandates for the university, including:

  • Training high-caliber professionals in Nigerian languages.
  • Providing language services and consultancy.
  • Conducting research and community outreach.
  • Facilitating the acquisition of knowledge and skills in various Nigerian languages.

The President of Nigeria will serve as the university’s Visitor, responsible for conducting periodic evaluations to ensure the institution operates in alignment with its objectives. According to Section 14(2), these evaluations must occur at least once every five years, allowing the President or designated representatives to review the university’s activities.

Additionally, the President has the authority to dismiss council members for misconduct or failure to fulfill their responsibilities, based on recommendations from the university council. Section 15(1) details the procedure for such removals, ensuring accountability within the university’s governing bodies.

The bill is anticipated to move to a second reading in the coming weeks, paving the way for a public hearing where stakeholders can contribute their perspectives on the establishment of this new educational institution.
