The Deputy Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese (APC-Benue), has assured Nigerians that the parliament will pass the tax reform bills introduced by President Bola Tinubu, calling them “catalysts for economic growth.”
Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Agbese outlined the lawmakers’ commitment to supporting the four executive bills: the Nigeria Tax Bill 2024, the Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.
“These bills provide a fiscal framework and establish clear legal structures for all taxes in the country,” Agbese said. “They aim to reduce disputes in tax administration and introduce mechanisms like a tax tribunal and tax ombudsman.”
The proposed legislation also seeks to repeal the Federal Inland Revenue Service Act and establish the Nigeria Revenue Service as part of a broader effort to streamline tax governance. The bills were submitted to the National Assembly on September 3, following recommendations from the Presidential Committee on Fiscal and Tax Reforms, led by Mr. Taiwo Oyedele.
Despite this, the 36 state governors have expressed opposition, calling for the withdrawal of the bills to allow for broader consultations and public engagement. Agbese revealed that some governors have gone as far as threatening lawmakers with political repercussions in the 2027 elections if they continue supporting the bills.
“Let me be clear: nobody can stop us from endorsing initiatives that aim to reboot Nigeria’s economy,” Agbese asserted. “The difference with the 10th Assembly is that we are intellectually sound, progressive, and united across party lines to ensure the country works, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abass.”
He emphasized that representatives were elected by their constituents, not governors, and pledged unwavering support for the bills as long as they benefit Nigerians.
Agbese added that lawmakers are carefully reviewing the bills and will make necessary adjustments to reflect patriotism and intellectual rigor before passage. “I foresee the 10th House passing these bills, fine-tuned with thoughtful amendments to ensure they truly serve the nation,” he said.
