The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) has begun distributing voting materials across the state’s 4,758 polling units in preparation for the local government elections scheduled for today, September 21, 2024.
Despite this, many residents appear unaware of the election. A correspondent from THE WHISTLER observed that some locals were seen at bus stops, seemingly unaware of the polls, waiting for public transport to take them to their destinations.
ISIEC Chairman, Charles Ejiogu, assured the public during the distribution process that the commission is fully committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election.
Meanwhile, streets in parts of Owerri witnessed reduced activity, with security forces heavily deployed at key points.
At the Imo State University (IMSU) junction, THE WHISTLER also noted the presence of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) officers enforcing a ban on vehicular movement, with exceptions for essential service providers.
