Port Harcourt, Nigeria — Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has affirmed that the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, will proceed as planned, emphasizing their potential to be the most peaceful and credible elections in the state’s history.

Full Support for Electoral Commission and Security Agencies

During a recent press briefing in Rumuolumeni, Governor Fubara disclosed that he has received updates from the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) regarding a court order that mandates the commission to conduct the elections. He expressed confidence in the support from security agencies to ensure a smooth electoral process.

“We are prepared for the election on October 5,” Fubara stated. “RSIEC has confirmed that they are operating under a court order, and the security agencies are expected to provide the necessary assistance.”

Emphasizing Credibility and Fairness

Fubara assured the public that this election would be one of the best conducted in Rivers State, highlighting the importance of a free and fair process. “While I may not be a lawyer, the court has given them the first in hand. We will provide all the support necessary to ensure a credible election.”

Urging Contractors to Accelerate Project Completion

In addition to addressing electoral matters, Governor Fubara inspected the ongoing Trans-Kalabari Road Project, which he considers a legacy initiative of his administration. He expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work and urged contractors to expedite efforts to meet project deadlines.

“From this location in Rumuolumeni, we started the road project that will connect the Bakana people to the city,” he noted. “While I acknowledge the challenging terrain, I expect faster progress as this project is crucial to me.”

Call for Integrity in Election Oversight

Furthermore, the Governor visited the RSIEC office, where he urged the electoral body to uphold the principles of a free and fair election. He pledged to defend the state as the Chief Security Officer and encouraged RSIEC to report any infractions.

“I have been made aware of some individuals planning to interfere with the electoral process,” he stated. “It is vital that Rivers State remains a place for everyone. The integrity of this process must be maintained, regardless of personal affiliations.”

“I am here to ensure that the RSIEC operates independently, and if there are any issues, I will personally address them,” he concluded.
