The opposition Labour Party (LP) has condemned the removal of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume from his position as the Senate’s majority chief whip, criticizing the decision as a punishment for his vocal support of struggling Nigerians.
The LP accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Senate leadership of punishing Ndume for “speaking truth to power,” a move they believe reflects a dictatorial attitude. In a statement on Wednesday, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh decried the APC-led Senate under Goodwill Akpabio for humiliating Ndume.
Senator Ndume faced backlash from the Presidency and the APC after a TV interview where he criticized President Bola Tinubu for ignoring the rising cost of living and food scarcity in Nigeria. Following his comments, the Senate demanded Ndume’s resignation, ultimately removing him from his position.
Reacting to these events, Labour Party spokesperson Ifoh expressed grave concerns over the direction of the current administration. He recalled the case of Senator Abdul Ningi, who was suspended and intimidated after exposing alleged budget padding by the Senate leadership and executive collaborators.
