Dr. Hakeem Baba Ahmed, a former aide to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has accused the president of desperately trying to prevent Nigerians from getting the full details of an alleged drug related trial involving him in the United States.
Baba Ahmed made the claim in a statement posted through his X handle, arguing that Nigerians have a right to know everything concerning their president, particularly when the matter involves allegations that could affect public confidence in the country’s leadership.
NN News Media reports that the development comes after President Tinubu reportedly asked a US court not to release certain records relating to the case, prompting Nigerians to demand that the documents and details be made public.
According to Baba Ahmed, the president has argued that he is entitled to privacy under United States law. However, he rejected that position, insisting that the Nigerian public has a legitimate interest in knowing the full details of issues surrounding the president.
Our President is desperate to keep Nigerians from having full details of his trial in the US over drugs, Baba Ahmed said in the statement.
He added that although the president says he is entitled to his privacy as provided by US law, Nigerians want to know everything about their president.
Baba Ahmed described that demand for information as an entitlement, linking it to what he called the importance of education and integrity in public leadership.
Nigerians are demanding the release of the records, arguing that citizens have a right to know the full history of the person occupying the country’s highest office.
According to them, if the United States expects other countries to cooperate in exposing and prosecuting international drug networks, should it not also ensure maximum transparency when its own law enforcement agencies hold records concerning a historical drug investigation involving the president of another country?
The development has renewed calls from Nigerians for the release of the US court records, with growing demands for transparency and clear answers about the matter involving President Tinubu.
