President Bola Tinubu has been appointed as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership, a significant recognition of his impactful leadership in healthcare.
The appointment was announced by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, in a statement released on Friday.
Tinubu’s appointment comes in light of his ambitious initiatives aimed at enhancing the health sector, focusing on innovation and people-centric approaches. His efforts, including plans to train 120,000 frontline health workers and double the number of primary health facilities nationwide, have garnered praise from the Committee of Heads of State and Government of Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
The statement highlights Tinubu’s commitment to expanding health personnel enrollment capacity and establishing a volunteer youth force to monitor primary health centers’ operations and financial integrity. These initiatives have positioned him as an ideal candidate to lead continental efforts in healthcare advancement.
The African Union’s Commission, through the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, formally appointed Tinubu based on the recommendation of the Committee, led by President Azali Assoumani of the Union of Comoros. In his new role, Tinubu has been invited to address the Ministerial Executive Leadership Programme in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of AU Heads of State and Government.
Tinubu’s administration has been instrumental in attracting global investments to Nigeria’s health sector, aiming to enhance infrastructure, equipment, and manpower for improved healthcare accessibility and quality for all citizens.
