President Bola Tinubu’s directive to security agencies to crack down on the display of foreign flags, specifically Russian ones, amidst ongoing nationwide protests highlights the heightened security concerns in Nigeria.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, elaborated on the President’s stance following a National Security Council meeting, indicating that the display of foreign flags is considered a treasonable offense.

The security situation has become increasingly volatile, with protests initially deemed peaceful evolving into violent outbursts and criminal activities. Gen. Musa noted that the flying of foreign flags, which he attributes primarily to children being manipulated by others, has further exacerbated the unrest. Authorities are actively seeking out those responsible for these provocations and plan to take stringent actions against them.

President Tinubu’s national address also emphasized the need for an immediate suspension of protests to prevent further violence and property damage. The President expressed a firm commitment to defending Nigeria’s democracy and sovereignty against any attempts to disrupt it, warning that opposition actors should not exploit the situation to undermine the government.

In response to these developments, all key security and political figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and the National Security Adviser, have been involved in deliberations and actions to address the crisis and ensure stability in the country.
