In a heartbreaking incident, Rev Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, a dedicated Catholic Priest at St Mary’s Catholic Church Tachira in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State, was tragically killed by kidnappers.

Okechukwu was abducted from his residence on the night of March 4, 2025, around 9:15 pm, and his life was taken in the early hours of March 5, coinciding with Ash Wednesday.

The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan, Kaduna State, confirmed the devastating news in a statement signed by Rev Fr. Jacob Shanet. The diocese described Okechukwu as a devoted servant of God who tirelessly worked in the vineyard of the Lord, spreading messages of peace, love, and hope.

“This untimely and brutal loss has left the Catholic community heartbroken and devastated. Okechukwu was a dedicated servant of God who worked selflessly in the vineyard of the Lord, spreading messages of peace, love, and hope. He was always available and accessible to his parishioners. His untimely death has left an indelible void within our diocesan family, and we share in the pain of his passing with his family, friends, and all those who knew and loved him,” the statement read.

The Catholic community has urged its members to pray for the repose of Okechukwu’s soul. “We invite all priests, religious, and faithful to offer Holy Masses, Rosaries, and prayers for the eternal repose of Fr. Sylvester, who gave his life in service to God and humanity. The details of his funeral will be communicated in due course,” the statement added.

A tragic and senseless loss, Rev Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu’s memory will live on in the hearts of those he touched with his unwavering dedication and compassion.
