Northern religious leaders in Nigeria have sent a strong warning to President Bola Tinubu, in a viral video saying they played a major role in putting him in power and will also take the government down if conditions do not improve.
According to the clerics, they supported the government at the start, but rising suffering across the North has pushed them to speak out. “If they do not change, we will bring it down. We will remove it. We will not continue to endure this suffering,” one of the clerics said.
The leaders emphasized that the people of Northern Nigeria are tired of hardship. “We helped them before, and we can take it away,” they added, highlighting their influence in the government’s rise, including the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket during the election.
The clerics warned that unless the administration addresses urgent issues affecting the North, such as poverty, insecurity, and economic challenges, they will mobilize to challenge the government. Their speeches are fiery and repetitive, showing the kind of political pressure that influential Northern leaders can exert.
Observers say the statements suggest that the religious and political alliance that helped President Tinubu win may not be reliable for the 2027 elections unless real change is made. Analysts also note that relying on the Muslim-Muslim ticket may no longer guarantee political support in the North.
