The Imo State Chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared its commitment to fully support whichever candidate emerges victorious from the party’s presidential primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This assurance was conveyed in a statement issued by the chapter’s Publicity Secretary, Dr. Kingsley Onochie, in Owerri, the state capital.

Addressing recent misleading media reports, Dr. Onochie explicitly refuted claims that the Imo ADC had endorsed former presidential candidate Peter Obi. He emphasized that the notion of the chapter backing any particular individual prior to the primaries was inaccurate and premature. “Once a candidate emerges at the primaries, he would enjoy our support,” Onochie stated, underlining the party’s principle of neutrality until the official candidate selection process concludes.

Dr. Onochie also reassured the public that the party’s leadership is focused on ensuring a peaceful, transparent, and rancor-free presidential primary process. This reflects the ADC’s broader aim to demonstrate internal democracy and unity at a time when the party, under the guidance of Prof. James Okoroma at the state level, is gaining considerable momentum. The Imo ADC has been attracting members from diverse political backgrounds, including defectors from the Labour Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Highlighting the chapter’s ambitions, Onochie promised a renewed focus on the welfare of Imo State residents, asserting that the ADC would bring significant positive change and development to the state. This momentum aligns with the wider national vision of the ADC, which positions itself as a credible opposition platform advocating for democratic principles and inclusive governance across Nigeria.

In the national context, the ADC has reiterated its stance of having no preferred presidential aspirant before the primaries. The party is considering either a consensus arrangement or a primary election to select its candidate, ensuring a transparent and democratic process. This aligns with statements from other notable ADC figures, including former Senate President David Mark and political leaders like Rotimi Amaechi, all emphasizing the party’s unity behind whoever emerges as the rightful candidate.

As the ADC positions itself as a formidable coalition aiming to present a strong alternative to the ruling party, the Imo chapter’s pledge of unbiased support strengthens the party’s internal coherence and signals its readiness to engage Nigerians with genuine democratic practices and effective leadership
