Sanusi Lamido Sanusi II has been restored to his position as the Emir of Kano, according to reliable sources.

This follows a resolution by the Kano State House of Assembly to depose the current Emir and dissolve the four new Emirates in the state, which were established under a contentious law in 2019.

While an official announcement is yet to be made, it is understood that Sanusi II has been reinstated and is due to arrive in Kano on Friday. As per trusted insiders, “With the Bill’s passage, Sanusi’s reinstatement is automatic. There’s no need for confirmation, we just have to wait for the Governor’s approval.”

The restructuring of the Kano Emirate was perceived as a political strategy to reduce the influence of Emir Sanusi II, who was a vocal critic of the previous administration led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The establishment of the new emirates fragmented the authority of the old Kano Emirate Council, diluting its power and influence.

In the meantime, Lawan Hussaini Chediyar Yan Gurasa, the Majority Leader of the Kano State House of Assembly and sponsor of the Amendment Bill, disclosed to reporters after Thursday’s session that, “the bill has been forwarded to the governor for approval. There is currently no active Emir in Kano in any of the five Emirates; Kano, Bichi, Gaya, Rano, and Karaye. The law now empowers the governor to summon the traditional kingmakers to select a new king.”
