FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has designated August 1 as a day to honor traditional rulers in Abuja and has warned that the city will not be available for protesters on that day.
In a press briefing following the FCT security council meeting in Abuja on Thursday, Wike announced that August 1 will be reserved for the chairpersons of the six area councils of Abuja to issue certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers.
“August 1 is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to jubilate and honor their traditional rulers. We will not allow anyone to disrupt this day of celebration and recognition,” Wike stated. “We want people to come out and celebrate this achievement of the current administration. The FCT is not available for protesters on this day.”
Wike acknowledged the right to protest but emphasized that it must be conducted within the bounds of the law. He mentioned that the security council is aware of potential protests under the banner of “end bad governance” but stressed the importance of national unity and collective effort to address the country’s challenges.
“This period calls for all Nigerians to work together to salvage our country,” Wike said. “President Bola Tinubu and his team are diligently working to address the challenges we face. We understand it’s a difficult time, but Tinubu has been transparent about the issues and is committed to resolving them.”
Expressing confidence in President Tinubu’s capacity to overcome these challenges, Wike urged Nigerians to be patient and supportive. He highlighted the positive changes already evident in the FCT, attributing them to the support from Tinubu’s administration.
“We have seen significant improvements in the FCT, thanks to Tinubu’s support. We are determined to elevate the FCT to its rightful place as a leading city in Africa and the world. We will not let anyone disrupt our progress or peace,” Wike affirmed. “Therefore, any plans to protest on August 1 or around that time will not be permitted in the FCT.”
Wike’s firm stance underscores the administration’s commitment to maintaining order and celebrating the contributions of traditional leaders in Abuja.
