Labour Party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has shared insights on global governance during a Leadership Dialogue in Athens, Greece.

The event brought together global leaders, including former presidents, prime ministers, senior government officials, military chiefs, academics, and sports personalities, to discuss the pressing issues of democracy, security, and the economy.

In his statement shared via X (formerly Twitter), Obi highlighted key issues facing Africa, emphasizing the need for future leaders to recognize the profound global and generational shifts occurring. He expressed concern that despite Africa’s abundant human and material resources, significant gaps in governance remain unmet.

“African nations face escalating insecurity, corruption, worsening poverty, high youth unemployment, and deep inequality,” Obi stated. “Over 50% of the world’s multidimensionally poor live in Sub-Saharan Africa, with Nigeria and Congo having over 60% of their populations in poverty, facing unacceptable levels of inequality.”

Obi called for urgent, transformative leadership to address these challenges. He urged African leaders to prioritize collective security, combat corruption, and invest in critical sectors like health and education. He stressed that by focusing on poverty reduction, unemployment, and inequality, African nations can chart a new course for people-centered development.

He added that non-state actors are increasingly taking control of security in some African nations, a situation that demands immediate government action. “Leaders must confront insecurity head-on and reassure citizens of the state’s capacity to protect them,” he said.

Obi concluded with a message of hope for Nigeria, affirming that the country has the resources necessary to lead these changes and is committed to setting the nation on the right path.

“A New Nigeria is Possible,” he declared.
