Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has issued a stern warning that any threat directed at opposition leader Peter Obi is, in fact, a threat against the entire Nigerian populace.

Atiku made this declaration in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, responding to the controversy surrounding Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, and his remarks about Peter Obi’s visit to Edo State.

Okpebholo, a prominent figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), sparked widespread criticism after he stated that Peter Obi must obtain security clearance before visiting Edo State. Critics interpreted this as a direct threat to Obi’s life and a dangerous precedent undermining democratic principles.

The controversy arose following a public event held on Friday, July 18, where Governor Okpebholo connected Peter Obi’s recent visit to an increase in violence within Edo State.

However, two days later, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, issued a press statement clarifying the governor’s position. Itua explained that Okpebholo’s comments were misrepresented and framed the requirement for security clearance as a routine security protocol, not an act of hostility toward Obi.

“It is imperative to state clearly that the governor did not issue any form of threat to Mr Obi, but rather emphasised the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically exposed persons, to notify and seek security clearance from the governor before embarking on any public engagements within the state,” Fred Itua said.

He further added, “As the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, it is the governor’s constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of all residents and visitors alike.”

In his Tuesday post on X, Atiku warned against making threats toward Obi or any opposition figure, emphasizing unity and respect across political divides. He stated:

“Let it be known that a threat against Peter Obi or any of us is a threat against ALL of us!”

Atiku’s statement underscores the importance of protecting democratic values and ensuring the safety of opposition leaders in Nigeria’s political landscape.
