A well known Islamic scholar from Zamfara State, Sheikh Tukur Jangebe, has advised Nigerians to accept free items distributed by the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general election but vote for the most qualified candidate, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
Jangebe made the remarks in a short video that has been shared widely on social media. He said that if President Bola Tinubu’s party brings spaghetti or mosquito repellent, people should line up and collect the items. He added that on election day they must vote for the person best suited for the job no matter the candidate’s religion or ethnic background.
“If Tinubu’s APC bring you spaghetti or mosquito repellent, line up and collect it. But when election day comes, vote for the most qualified candidate, regardless of religion or ethnicity,” he said.
The cleric’s message also included a sharp criticism of the money used for political campaign handouts, suggesting that Nigerians should not feel obliged to support a party simply because they received gifts from it.
After all, as the message implies, the items were bought with public funds allegedly stolen and used for campaign activities.
His remarks emphasised the importance of voter independence and urged citizens to look beyond party loyalty, religious affiliation and ethnic identity when choosing their leaders.
With the 2027 general election approaching, Jangebe’s message highlights the debate over campaign handouts and their potential influence on voters, while encouraging Nigerians to make their decisions based on candidates’ qualifications and records.
His central message was clear: accept the gifts if they are offered, but make the final choice at the polls based on who you believe is most qualified to lead.
