The Abia State Government has reiterated its commitment to providing free and compulsory basic education in public schools, warning that any form of extortion from students or their families during enrollment will be met with strict legal consequences.
This was emphasized by the Executive Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Lady Lydia Onuoha, during a ceremony marking the enrollment of 29 out-of-school children and the inauguration of classroom renovations at Community Primary School, Umuala-Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North LGA. The event, organized by Caritas Nigeria in partnership with state ministries and the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), also marked the launch of an Education Trust Fund to support students.
Lady Onuoha, represented by ASUBEB Director Mrs. Nnenna Okenwa, highlighted the current administration’s efforts to elevate public schools to a level comparable with the best private institutions in Abia State.
“Governor Alex Chioma Otti is reinforcing that basic education must remain free and compulsory. Any demands for money before a child can attend school will not be tolerated by the government,” Onuoha warned.
She further shared that significant improvements, including perimeter fencing and upgraded facilities, are planned for public schools across the state. “Soon, public schools in Abia will be unrecognizable, including your own,” she added.
Mrs. Naomi Thompson, a Technical Officer from Caritas Nigeria, explained that the NGO has been actively working for over 14 years to support school enrollments through partnerships with ministries and local communities. She noted that HopeSpring Development Initiative, in collaboration with JDPC and Caritas Nigeria, has funded exam fees for students at Umuala Community Primary School as part of their efforts to reintegrate out-of-school children.
“Our vision is to create a world where everyone enjoys the fullness of life, and this partnership aims to ensure that no child is left behind,” Thompson stated.
The School Management Committee Chairman, Mr. Godspower Ahuama, called on the government and well-meaning individuals to provide support for underprivileged students and address the pressing issues of inadequate infrastructure and a shortage of teachers in public schools.
Traditional ruler of the community, Eze Patrick Anaba, the school’s Headmistress, Mrs. Nwakpa Nwolorondu, and joyful parents pledged their commitment to supporting students with learning materials to ensure their success.
