Former UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has come under heavy criticism from Nigerians following his tweet urging voters to “stop the Labour supermajority and vote Conservative.” This remark has reignited discussions about his earlier congratulatory message to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose rise to power has been marred by allegations of electoral fraud.
Critics pointed out the inconsistency in Sunak’s stance, highlighting Tinubu’s controversial past, which includes accusations of drug dealing and money laundering during his time in the United States. Nigerians took to social media to mock Sunak, calling this backlash a form of payback for his perceived endorsement of Tinubu.
While many derided Sunak, some suggested that he should contact Tinubu to seek assistance from Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Yakubu to help him counter the Labour Party’s influence.
Meanwhile, the UK’s Centre-left Labour Party secured an impressive 412 out of 650 seats, marking the end of the Conservative Party’s 14-year tenure.
